First sneak peak: http://www.sapphiresteel.com/Blog/article/ruby-in-steel-2-0-announced

There will be a low cost upgrade for existing users of RiS 1.0 and we'll have beta software available soon.

Does this really mean that Ruby 1.9.1 support will be skipped? We're stuck with 1.9.1 until we can accommodate the differences in the socket library. There's a lot of affected code here. Also, could you clarify whether RinS 2.0 will work with VS2008 as well as VS2010?

Ruby In Steel 2 will only officially support the versions of Ruby specified. It may work with other versions but we not officially plan to provide support for those. There are many versions of the Ruby interpreter and even minor changes to builds can cause incompatibilities. This is why we have decided only to support the latest major releases of 1.8, 1.9 and JRuby. In most cases, any incompatibilities are most likely to affect our fast Cylon debugger; I would usually expect the slow debugger to work in those cases, though we make no claim that this will always be the case. It will also be possible to toggle between different run and debug targets - so, for example, you could use an unsupported version for edit-and-run and a supported version for debug. Ruby In Steel 2 will be available only for VS2010 but its license will also be valid to Ruby In Steel 1.0 which supports VS 2008 and 2005.

best wishes

wow, unless I'm missing something the price of entry into RiS is quite high. VS 2010 pro edition is 799.00. I'm actually chatting with MS right now. Don't mind the price of RiS itself. I guess the market for RiS must count on the fact that the developer was doing VS related work. I'm a Smalltalker and so therefore have not had much use for VS. To get into RiS I will have to spend over 1K, yep, that's a barrier.

I'll enjoy the IDE for the 2 months and try to learn as much as I can.

It works fine in the free editions of Visual Studio: http://www.sapphiresteel.com/Products/Ruby-In-Steel/FAQ/installation/article/can-i-install-ruby-in-steel-or

That said, most of our customers are existing Visual Studio users.

but I thought you stated that Ris 2.0 will only work with VS 2010 and unless you will also provide a free version of VS 2010, then purchasing now will drive me into a wall later i.e. I will be forced to buy VS 2010 when I want to move to RiS 2.0

The link I gave above provides a link to the free VS 2010 download. We'll have beta software of RiS 2.0 quite soon so you may want to wait to try that.

We're doing the final testing. I think we should have a public beta available next week.  Smiley
