I had downloaded and installed Ruby before finding out about Ruby In Steel. The ruby distribution I have is 1.8.6-26 from RubyLang.org/RubyForge.org.  The version that ships with RISpe seems to be -25.

Can I install RISpe in a way that will let it use the already-installed Ruby?  Or should I install RISpe, then reinstall the later Ruby?  Or is there something else I should do that I'm overlooking?

(I have not installed RISpe, yet.)

Ruby In Steel supports any version of 1.8.6 fine so you can install that version. We haven't updated the Personal Edition installer for a while and you are not obliged to use the version of Ruby which it includes.
