The Amethyst Project Import/Convert wizard provides an easy way to import existing code to a new location on disk or convert the code in its original location.

Import Or Convert A Project

- Convert project in original location

Choose this if you wish to convert a Flex project, leaving it in its original directory. This may be useful if (for example) you want to share the project between Adobe Flash Builder and Amethyst. The Wizard will create a new project and Solution file to let you work with the project in Visual Studio but it will not modify your source files so you may also continue editing them in Flash Builder.

- Import project to new location

Choose this if you wish to make a completely new copy of a Flex project in a different directory.

- Convert Flash IDE project in original location

Choose this if you wish to work on code created by the Flash IDE (e.g. Flash CS4/CS5). The Wizard will create a new project and Solution file to let you work with the project in Visual Studio but it will not modify your source files so you may also continue editing them in Flash IDE. Note that this will import ActionScript (.as) files but will not import any scripts embedded into a Flash .fla file.

Import an existing project to a new location

Imports a Flex project to a new location on disk.

Location of original project: This is the directory containing the original project. If this is a Flash Builder project this is normally the directory containing the .project file and several subdirectories including \src. The Import Wizard has a button to let you browse the disk to find this directory.

Location for imported project: This is the directory in which a copy of the original project will be made. Once again, there is a button to let you browse your disk. If you need to create a new directory you may do so by clicking the ‘Make New Folder’ button in the ‘Browse For Folder’ dialog.

Name for new Amethyst project: This will define the name of the Visual Studio solution and project files which will be created by the Importer.

Convert an existing project in its original location

Converts a Flex project in its original location on disk.

The Convert Wizard creates a new Amethyst project and adds to it the source files from the existing project. The original source files are left, unmodified, in their original location. This makes it possible to share the same code files between Amethyst and another IDE or editor.

Project location: This is the directory containing the original project. If this is a Flash Builder project this is normally the directory containing the .project file and several subdirectories including \src. The Convert Wizard has a button to let you browse the disk to find this directory.

Project name: This will define the name of the Visual Studio solution and project files which will be created by the Convert Wizard.

Convert a Flash Project

Converts a Flash IDE project in its original location on disk.

Project location: This is the directory containing the original Flash IDE project.

Project name: This will define the name of the Visual Studio solution and project files which will be created by the Convert Wizard.

Create new Flash Project

The Amethyst Importer provides two options when converting a Flash IDE project for use in Amethyst:

- Flash Project
- AIR Project

Information is also provided on the folder location and project name which were selected in the previous stage. If you need to change either of these, click the ‘Previous’ button. If you wish to proceed with the project conversion, click ‘Finish’.

- After the Flash Project is imported

One or more FLA documents will be shown in the Solution Explorer. The active FLA will be shown in bold. If you wish to change the active FLA, right-click another FLA document in the Solution Explorer and select ‘Set as main’.

- To open the project in the Flash IDE

Right-click the FLA in the Solution Explorer and select ‘Open Flash IDE’.

- To Run or Debug

Press the default buttons or keystrokes (e.g. F5 or CTRL-F5) to debug or run the project. The project will be built using the Flash IDE compiler and will then be available for debugging in Amethyst. NOTE: To debug a Flash IDE project, you must set the appropriate debug option in the Flash IDE. For example, in Flash CS4, select File/Publish Settings/Flash and be sure that Permit debugging is checked.

Select Options

- Project options (already selected)

The first three items are read-only and show the choices made earlier in the wizard:

- Amethyst Project Name
- Location of Original Project
- Location of new Amethyst Project

If you wish to edit these, click the ‘Previous’ button to go back to the previous screen in the Wizard.

- Project Type

Here you may specify whether the project type:

- Flex
- AIR
- ActionScript

If you are importing or converting a Flash Builder or Flex Builder project, Amethyst will attempt to auto-detect the project type.

- Framework

Choose the Flex framework which will be used to build the imported project:

- Flex 3 Framework
- Flex 4 Framework

The Wizard will create a project with the appropriate settings and references for the selected framework. You must have the selected framework installed. If you select a framework which is not the default you will need to select this alternative framework in Project/Properties/Application after the Import/Convert Wizard has completed.

- Output Type

Here you may select the output type:

- Application (default)
- Library project.

- Exclude selected files and folders from new project

Here you may optionally choose to omit certain files or folders from being added to the Amethyst project. For example, you could omit files with specific extensions such as .bak;.swf and folders with specific names such as bin-debug;history. The two check-boxes at the bottom allow you to exclude hidden files and directories (those with the hidden attribute set) and Flash Builder or Flex Builder settings files (files beginning with a dot such as .project, .flexProperties and .actionScriptProperties).

Finish Import/Convert

Click the Finish button to import or convert your project. A new Amethyst project and solution will now be created and its files and folders will be added to the Solution Explorer. If this is a Flex Builder project, Amethyst will attempt to detect the main file.

If Amethyst is unable to determine the main file or if you wish to define some other file as the main file, you may do so by right-clicking a file name in the Solution Explore and selecting Set as Main. The name of the main file is displayed in bold text in the Solution Explorer:
