ActionScript tutorial - part two

Adventures in ActionScript

If you are new to ActionScript and Flex you might find my tutorial series on the Bitwise Magazine site to be of some help...

The series is called Adventures in ActionScript and Flex and it leads you through all the steps needed to create a simple exploring-style adventure game. In the first part, I explained how to create custom classes (the Rooms of the game) and store these as key-value pairs in a dictionary-like structure known as an ‘associative array’.

In part two, which went online today, I show how to construct a multi-linked network of rooms to make a genuinely map-like structure in which each exit in each room object points to another room in that direction.

You don’t need to be an adventure game fanatic (I hope!) to get something out of this series as it will cover many of the fundamental features of Flex and ActionScript which can be put to use in more serious applications too. On the other hand, if you are interested in gaming, this may get you off to a good start.

The source code is all provided and can be loaded up straight into Amethyst.
